About the Tim Shibahara Memorial Scholarship Fund

Tim Shibahara was a lifelong resident of the city of Estacada and an active community member. Tim grew up along the Clackamas River and established a career working to restore fish populations native to the river. Tim became an active member of the Clackamas River Basin Council whose goal is to foster partnerships for clean water and to improve fish and wildlife habitat and the quality of life for those who live, work and recreate in the watershed.

The Tim Shibahara Memorial Scholarship Fund is open to graduating high-school seniors, and returning students who have successfully been awarded the scholarship in the past year, who are pursuing higher education in a discipline relevant to goals of the Clackamas River Basin Council. Examples include, but are not limited to: fish and wildlife science, natural resources, environmental science, etc. Preference will be given to students demonstrating a history of community involvement.

Award amount: $1,000 each

Required Application Contents:

Applicants: You must submit your application to the Clackamas River Basin Council no later than May 1st, 2025. Use the form below to apply, or submit a printed application via email to scholarship@clackamasriver.org.

 A complete application packet must include:

  1. Completed application (this form);
  2. Recent college transcript demonstrating an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher (upload below);
  3. Typed essays in response to the questions at the end of this form (upload below).

What steps have you taken during your first year of college to explore your interests, connect with peers, or get involved in your academic community? This could include joining clubs, attending events, working on class projects, or engaging in other activities.
How have you adapted to the transition from high school to college, and what skills or habits have you developed to support your academic and personal growth?
Describe an inspiring experience from your first year of college—whether in class, a conversation with a professor or peer, or an event—and explain how it has shaped your goals or perspective.
Even as a first-year student, how have you found ways to contribute to your college community? This might include supporting classmates, participating in group projects, or engaging in volunteer opportunities.

The essays are the most important aspect of the application. Please answer each of the following questions. Submit the responses in a separate typed document but please include your full name and high school at the top of each page. Limit responses to each question to 750 words or less. 

Question 1) Educational Pursuits and Career Goals:
Reflect on how your college studies and future career aspirations continue to align with the mission of the Clackamas River Basin Council. Share specific examples of coursework, projects, or activities you’ve undertaken during your first year of college that demonstrate your commitment to this mission.

Question 2) Community Involvement:
Describe the role of community engagement in your personal and professional development as a college student. Highlight how you have contributed to your college or local community in ways that reflect the values of the Clackamas River Basin Council. Provide specific examples of leadership, collaboration, or initiatives you’ve been part of during your time in college.
